Class Meetings From Josephine Smith, a fourth grade teacher in Astoria, New York: "My students were constantly tattling on each other so I outlawed it in my classroom. Now, if a student is having a problem with another student, I have him/her commit it to paper, sign it and place it in the classroom discussion box. On Fridays, the class sits in a circle and I or another student read the papers aloud. We have an open discussion about the problem and students suggest possible solutions. Then we take a vote. Students feel good that they are able to contribute and they learn communication skills." |
